Language
- We know that the language around services and the NDIS can get a bit tricky from time to time, therefore, we have provided some guidance below to help understand what it might mean to you
- Participant A participant is someone who has been approved for NDIS funding so they can access services.
- Provider A provider is an organisation or a person who provides services and support to you.
- Lived experience Lived experience is someone who lives with a disability or disabilities, or a family member who cares for and understands the impact of the disability.
- NDIA Partners The NDIA have paired up with partners in the community to assist with reviewing your NDIS plan. These organisations are:) WANSLEA (for 0-8 years) and Mission Australia, AMP (for 7+ years).
Acronyms
- The disability sector is renowned for using a myriad of acronyms, some of the main acronyms are listed below.
- NDIA National Disability Insurance Agency. This is the funding body that provides the insurance scheme (NDIS) that funds the supports in your NDIS plan.
- NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme. The scheme the NDIA provide to fund the supports in your NDIS plan.
- LAC Local Area Coordinator. A Local Area Coordinator is a partner of the NDIS who assists you with reviewing and building your NDIS plan.
- AT Assistive Technology. Assistive Technology is equipment that is customized to your support needs. For example, power wheelchairs, beds, walkers, bidets, etc.
- PPE Personal Protective Equipment. PPE is mainly used in the event where you or your carer may come in contact with harmful substances (bacteria, blood, bodily fluids). For example, masks, sanitizer, gloves, etc.
- PM Plan Manager. NDIA call them Plan Managers, however, they perform and can be referred to as Accountants as they assist you with processing invoices and paying payslips for private support workers.
- TPS Therapy services.
- AC Advanced Clinician. Typically a clinician who is a senior in their role based on the number of years they have been providing the service. This is with therapy services only.
- FCA Functional Capacity Assessment. A FCA is usually delivered by an Occupational Therapist to see where you are currently functioning at, this also allows the Occupational Therapist to see what supports you may need.
- BSP Behaviour Support Plan or Behaviour Support Practitioner. A Behaviour Support Practitioner develops a Behaviour Support Plan to build an understanding of what you like and what you might find triggering. The BSP is to help your support network to better understand and support you when things do not always go according to plan.
- SILSupported Independent Living. This is a type of accommodation also known as ‘group homes’ where you share your home with others and have 24/7 support.
- FLO Flexible Living Options. This is NDIA’s way of telling you that your accommodation options are flexible in how you want to expend the funds. This might be in ILO (below) or MTA (Medium Term Accommodation) or STA (Short Term Accommodation).
- ILO Independent Living Options. This is a specifically funded support under the NDIA that designs a support service in an accommodation setting (typically a private residence) that is a combination of both informal and formal supports based on an individualised profiling system completed by the provider.
- ADE Australian Disability Enterprise. An ADE provider assists with employment in a fully supported environment.
- ADES Disability Employment Services. A DES provider provides support in an open employment setting. This means the provider will help integrate you to being fully independent in your job in an ‘open’ or mainstream environment.
- SLES School Leaver Employment Support. The SLES program is designed for school leavers to integrate into a job that they choose. Some providers offer support staff to assist with this transition.
